Central Oregon Economy in View:
Oregon employers dropped jobs from nonfarm payrolls in each of the past three months. Average monthly job gains have slowed in Oregon over the past few years. More recent data show those gains switching to losses. Newly revised/benchmarked data also show that Oregon lost nearly 25,000 jobs over the past year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Oregon ticked up to 5.0% in July, above where it was last year at 4.2%. Oregon’s unemployment is above the U.S.’s unemployment rate of 4.2%. Oregon is similar to its 10-year unemployment rate average of 4.6%. Regionally, one of the most substantial net job gains happened in Deschutes County where 530 new jobs in the Private education and health services happened over the year.

Topic of the Month: Oregon’s Nonnprofit Organizations
A not-for-profit corporation, commonly referred to as a "nonprofit," is organized to achieve a purpose other than to generate a profit. These entities qualify for federal tax-exempt status and must reinvest any surplus revenues into efforts that further the mission of the organization. These organizations range from trade unions and religious groups to food banks and private schools. Many hospitals are also organized as nonprofit corporations.
According to the Oregon Employment Department’s covered employment statistics, Oregon’s 10,500 nonprofit establishments employed 190,400 workers statewide. The Central Oregon counties of Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson have 594 nonprofit organizations and employ 9,518 people. Health care and social assistance dominated Oregon’s nonprofit employment in 2024, representing 116,900 jobs or 61%. The other services industry included 23,900 nonprofit jobs and educational services employed 20,500. These three industries represented 85% of Oregon’s nonprofit employment.
Oregon's 21 nonmetro counties provided a home base for 1,600 nonprofit employer units in 2024, or 6% of all nonmetro private industry employer reporting units. Nonprofit organizations provided about 22,200 rural Oregon jobs, or 9% of all nonmetro private employment. Rural nonprofit pay averaged $62,044 in 2024, which exceeded the average for all private industries by 16%, around $8,600.
