Several weeks ago, I sat down to pen an article in recognition of “Support Your Local Chamber of Commerce Day” on October 21st, celebrating the amazing work our Chamber team contributes to the community. It seemed like a good opportunity to reflect on the role of the Chamber and the businesses that make our community thrive.

But after the heartbreaking tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School, that message no longer feels right. Like so many in Bend, I am struggling to find the words to express the grief and heartbreak our community is experiencing.

Our hearts are with the families who have suffered unimaginable loss, the students and educators whose lives have been forever changed, and everyone who is hurting. No words can ease that pain, and no act of kindness can undo what has happened.

But in the days and weeks since, I've been struck by the many ways our community has come together to support one another. Our local businesses have been a big part of that response. Within hours of the tragedy, businesses across Bend began opening their doors and asking how they could help.

Restaurants offered free meals to families, educators, and first responders. Art studios and local shops welcomed children and families, offering a place to gather, create, or simply be together. Others donated their services, organized fundraisers, or found ways to support those directly impacted.

Some of these gestures have been shared widely. Many others have happened quietly, without recognition or expectation of anything in return. What stands out to me is that these businesses didn't wait to be asked. They saw a need and responded with whatever they had to offer. A meal, a place to gather, or simply a little comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

As CEO of the Bend Chamber, I spend a lot of time talking about the importance of our local business community. We often focus on the economic contributions, including the jobs businesses create, the investments they make, and the goods and services they provide. All of those things matter, but only as part of the story.

Our local businesses are also the people who coach our kids, volunteer in our schools, serve on nonprofit boards, and show up when a neighbor needs help. They are parents, friends, and neighbors who care deeply about this place we all call home.

In the weeks and months ahead, the immediate outpouring of support will give way to the longer work of healing, which will require us to keep showing up for one another and our community. And I have no doubt we will continue to do so.

The Bend Chamber's work is rooted in the belief that a strong business community helps build a strong Bend. These past weeks have been a reminder of what that looks like beyond the economic numbers. To every business owner, employee, volunteer, and neighbor who has offered kindness and support, a sincere thank you. You are the heart of this community.
