As artificial intelligence, online information, and digital media continue to reshape how people access knowledge, what role should public libraries play in helping communities navigate an increasingly complex information landscape?
The City Club of Central Oregon will examine that question at its upcoming forum, "Beyond Books: The Purpose and Role of Libraries in a Digital Age," on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon.
For generations, libraries have served as trusted community institutions, providing access to information, education, and civic resources. Today, libraries are being called upon to do much more. From addressing misinformation and supporting digital literacy to meeting changing educational needs and expanding access to community services, libraries continue to evolve alongside the communities they serve.
This forum will explore how libraries are adapting to technological change while maintaining their core mission of fostering informed and engaged communities. Panelists will discuss the challenges libraries face in an era of artificial intelligence, social media, and rapidly changing information ecosystems, as well as the opportunities libraries have to strengthen intellectual integrity and civic discourse.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how libraries have changed over time, the pressures they face today, and why they remain essential community institutions in the digital age.
City Club forums are designed to foster informed, nonpartisan dialogue on issues that matter to Central Oregon. Audience members will have the opportunity to submit questions and engage with the discussion.
