This month marks a special milestone for our team: Talena Barker, Vice President of Leadership Development at the Bend Chamber of Commerce, celebrates seven years of service to the organization. Over that time, Talena has become a driving force behind community leadership, workforce development, and talent cultivation in Bend — particularly through her work with the BendNEXT Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Bend Chamber.

A Passion for People, Leadership, and Purpose

Talena’s journey has always been centered on strengthening the ties that bolster our region’s success. With a background in nonprofit development, communications, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, she brings creativity, determination, and heart to her role. Her work is focused on building the continuum—from emerging talent to seasoned civic leaders—ensuring that our community doesn’t just grow but thrives.

BendNEXT: Making Leadership Real

Since BendNEXT’s expansion in 2019, Talena has been instrumental in leading its mission to strengthen our workforce and leadership pipeline. As part of these efforts, she helps guide and grow multiple programs, including:

  • Leadership Bend – identifying, training, and connecting citizens committed to civic leadership roles. Nearly 700 Leadership Bend alumni now serve Bend and Central Oregon through board service, elected office, and various civic roles.
  • Bend Emerging Talent – formerly “Young Professionals,” this program is about professional and personal growth, networking, mentorship, and community involvement, especially for those in early- to mid-stage careers.
  • Bend 101 – a program that offers foundational education about the community, helping participants understand Bend’s history, key organizations, and how local civic, economic, and nonprofit sectors work together.

Under Talena’s leadership, BendNEXT also plays a significant role in addressing larger systemic needs—such as workforce housing, childcare, and inclusion—helping ensure that leadership development is supported by the essential infrastructures people need to thrive.

Impact & Gratitude

Over her seven years, Talena has helped expand participation in BendNEXT’s programs, deepen the kinds of leadership we develop, and forge connections between businesses, nonprofits, civic institutions, and individuals. She has broken down barriers—helping people not only get access to programs, but also see themselves as leaders in every sector of life here in Central Oregon.

As we mark this anniversary, we express deep gratitude for Talena’s dedication, vision, and daily work. From helping young professionals find their footing, to supporting established leaders in service, her impact is woven into the fabric of BendNEXT and the Chamber’s broader mission.

Here’s to many more years of leadership, collaboration, and growth—thanks, Talena, for everything you bring to our community.
