Meet the Advocacy Council Behind the Bend Chamber’s Policy Work

Behind much of the Bend Chamber's policy work is a group of business and community leaders helping us evaluate issues and determine where the Chamber's voice can make a difference.

The Bend Chamber Advocacy Council has two primary responsibilities: identifying, evaluating and recommending policy positions to the Chamber Board of Directors, and promoting awareness and engagement around policy issues affecting the business community. The Council reviews issues at the local, state and federal levels, considers requests for engagement from members and strategic partners, and engages with elected officials around Chamber priorities.

In practice, that means the Council serves as an important sounding board between Chamber staff, members, and the Board.

An issue might start with a proposed ordinance at the City of Bend, a bill introduced in Salem, or even a Chamber member contacting us about a challenge their business is experiencing. Staff gather information and perspectives, the Advocacy Council helps evaluate the issue and, when appropriate, recommends a position or course of action.

Having business leaders involved in that process is important. Public policies rarely affect every employer in exactly the same way. Bringing different industries and perspectives into the conversation helps us ask better questions, identify unintended consequences and develop positions that reflect the broader business community.

The Council's work isn't always outwardly visible, but it plays an important role in ensuring Chamber advocacy is thoughtful, informed and connected to the businesses were present.
