Bend listed as Forbes cheap place to live rich

Bend was recently highlighted in Forbes as a great place to get paid big money, while “shedding the shackles of metropolitan life.” Reporter Rich Karlgaard tells readers they can live a better life now by taking advantage of today’s technologies.
The article also describes the type of property a person can get in the Bend area compared to metropolitan areas like New York, Boston, Washington, California, or Florida.
Karlgaard describes Bend as follows: “where the sky is blue and dry, the Deschutes River trout jump year round and Mt. Bachelor winter powder is bitchin’.”

Public lands bill to advance in Senate

In a very rare Sunday session, the U.S. Senate voted to advance the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 protecting more than 2 million acres of wilderness across 9 states.
There were several Oregon specific bills that were wrapped up into the legislation including the Oregon Badlands Wilderness Act of 2008. The act would cover almost 30,000 acres of the Badlands area and give it the designation of wilderness.
Other areas in Oregon included in the act are the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness, the Copper Salmon Wilderness, the Spring Basin Wilderness, and the Soda Mountain Wilderness.
“I regret that the Mount Hood, Copper Salmon and my other bills were not acted on last year because this new congress has many new natural resource issues it needs to focus on, including thousands of new jobs and better management for our nation’s forests,” said Senator Ron Wyden in a press release. “I also regret that my bills were blocked last Congress because Senator Smith was my full partner in these efforts, and he deserved tremendous credit protecting some of Oregon’s most special places.”
Senate approval is expected soon. The legislation includes about 160 bills with protection for land covering places in California, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Virginia, Arkansas, and Michigan.

Java with Judy

Representative Judy Stiegler plans to be in Bend on Saturday and will host an informal community forum called “Java with Judy.” Stiegler hopes to make this a regular monthly event and sees it as a way to talk with constituents about their concerns.
"This is an opportunity for me to listen to the citizens of Bend and get an update on their priorities and issues as we begin this session,” said Stiegler, in a recent press release. “While constituents come to Salem to meet with their representatives, many cannot. I want to provide them with an opportunity to share their views on issues that are important to our community."
The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. at Jackson’s Corner in Bend. Stiegler was sworn into office on January 12.
