This Week's Highlights

Old Mill District: Capturing the Season

The story of the Old Mill District began almost 100 years ago when two of the world’s largest sawmills opened on the banks of central Oregon’s Deschutes River. Now, this story continues with shopping, dining, entertainment and a holiday season that is full of tradition.
“Our location, our buildings and a lot of what we do here has a rich history in Bend,” said Noelle Fredland, marketing director for the Old Mill District. “When it comes to the holidays, we want to continue making history by creating traditions that families can enjoy year after year.”
Just one of these cherished traditions is the complimentary carriage rides with Wagon’s Ho that the Old Mill District offers its patrons each year. Any tips or donations that passengers make to the carriage operators go directly to a local charity, Kids Center. Most will agree – there’s nothing quite like a horse and carriage ride on a crisp winter evening while watching holiday decorations go by and listening to live caroling – another great holiday event that is offered at the Old Mill District.
Of course, the holidays just aren’t festive without that special someone…Santa Claus! With its annual Celebrity Santa appearances, the Old Mill District has its visitors asking “Who’s Your Santa?”
Fredland continued, “Celebrity Santa was something we came up with that would involve the community even more in the holiday celebrations. We invite local business owners, government and non-profit members as well as media personalities to come play Santa throughout the season. It’s a great deal of fun for the people who get to play Santa, and for those visiting him to guess who’s behind the beard.”
With festivities throughout the rest of the year, the Old Mill District invites one and all to come down and start making a new tradition this holiday season. For a complete schedule of events, please visit www.theoldmill.com.

Dave Rathbun to serve on Bend Chamber Board of Directors

The Bend Chamber is proud to announce Mt. Bachelor President and General Manager Dave Rathbun will serve on the Chamber Board of Directors starting in 2009. Rathbun will fill the seat vacated by Dr. Chris DiGiulio.
“Dave is certainly a leader in his industry and I am confident that he will be a very good community leader as well,” said David Rosell, Chairman of the Board.
Rathbun will join new board members Steve Galash from R&H Construction and Ron Wright from Cessna.
Galash has served on various boards and committees and is currently a board member for the Central Oregon Builders Association (COBA) and is also a board member of COBA’s Commercial Council.
Wright is a member of various organizations including the Aerospace Industries Association of Oregon, the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance, and the American Production and Inventory Control Society.

Holiday Lighting Information

It’s that time of year when homeowners and businesses alike will decorate with indoor and outdoor lighting to create festive holiday scenes. The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission wants to make sure all lighting is used properly to prevent fire or serious injury.
Here are some quick tips from the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission for businesses: If you plan to use outdoor lights make sure to check the label to see if they are certified for outdoor use, make sure to check for frayed or bare wires and throw away damaged sets, keep plugs and connections away from water sources like puddles and snow, make sure to fasten outdoor lights securely, and turn off all lights when leaving the buildings.
If you would like more information about safety precautions go to www.ibew280.org.

In the news

Reminder: Turn off all sprinklers: The colder temperatures have finally arrived in Central Oregon, and according to the latest forecasting, snow will soon follow. There are still some active irrigation systems in the area and the Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee wants to ensure all roadways and walkways are safe. Irrigation systems that are not recalibrated correctly can send water onto sidewalks and streets causing icy conditions.
America’s Got Talent is coming to the Pacific Northwest: For the first time, America’s Got Talent will come to the Pacific Northwest to hold auditions in 2009. The variety show plans to hold auditions in eight cities from January through April including Seattle, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The casting call will go out for an array of colorful up and coming stars. Exact dates have not been set yet, but for more information go to www.nbc.com/Americas_Got_Talent.
Cyberwar, is the US losing?: The U.S. Commission on Cybersecurity recently released a report stating the next President should create a Cybersecurity Operations Center. The report states the U.S faces many threats including credit card fraud, bank fraud, electronic spies, and much more. The commission would like to see the center created and a new form of regulations for computer security in the public and private sectors. “We’re playing a giant game of chess now and we’re losing badly,” commission member Tom Kellermann told Business Week.
