Blockbuster makes Hollywood donation to BMC's Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Department

Local Blockbuster stores generously donated 100 DVD's to Bend Memorial Clinic to be used for patients who are undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions. The sessions, which can last up to two hours each, help patients who are facing significant health issues, such as debilitating wounds, diabetes, gout, cancer recovery and many others. HBOT treatments are given in a series of several weeks, each day, and can be tedious for patients as they must lay in a chamber for an extended period of time.

"Watching movies helps pass the time, but our library was small. This recent donation by local Blockbusters is greatly appreciated," states Ryan Combs, Service Line Director of the HBOT department. "We are most grateful as the donation helps in the healing effort."

Mid Oregon Credit Union Reaches Half Billion Dollar Milestone

Mid Oregon Credit Union, Central Oregon's only credit union headquartered in Bend, surpassed the half billion dollar mark in lending since their organization started in 1957.

"Reaching the one half billion dollar milestone in lending is a tribute to our members, as well as our staff," said Doug Nelson, Board of Directors Chairperson. "As we look back over the past 52 years we are proud of the trust that continues to grow with the residents of Central Oregon."

Mid Oregon's mission is to build relationships through valued financial solutions. They have worked hard to build relationships of trust and provide great service to their members. It might be surprising to some people that Mid Oregon Credit Union keeps growing and succeeding in these difficult financial times.

For over 52 years Mid Oregon Credit Union has been providing loans to residents of Central Oregon. Their lending includes auto, truck, recreational vehicles as well as home loans, lines of credit, small business loans, and VISA credit cards. They are a full-service financial institution with convenient branches in Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras.

Beyond the Saddle: The Artistic Journey of Edward Burns Quigley

The exhibit Beyond the Saddle: The Artistic Journey of Edward Burns Quigley opened at the High Desert Museum in August.

The show includes 20 works, from traditional oil paintings, cartoons, and World War I era works to magazine covers.

This exhibit illustrates the scope of his work as it relates to his life, from high school and World War I to his love of horses and the wild range land of eastern Washington. One artifact, Quigley’s easel, is on display.

Quigley came of age in the Pacific Northwest in the early twentieth century. It was an era when horses were an important and ever-present part of Western life. As an artist, they were his favorite subjects.

"Beyond the horses that he was known for, across a career that spanned a half a century, Quigley used his sketchbook and paint brush to capture an array of artistic expressions," said Bob Boyd, the Museum’s curator of Western History, who created the exhibit with Tracy Johnson, curator of collections and exhibits.

The exhibit runs through January 10.

Working Wonders Focuses on Long-Term Sustainability with Latest Fundraising Efforts

You may have heard that Working Wonders has embarked on a 2009 fundraising appeal - hoping to raise $200,000 by October of this year. For the last four years, the popular children’s museum has successfully raised up to 60 percent of its operating budget (which equals $200,000), through exhibit sponsorships, donations, grants and events. Community, corporate and individual support for the museum has sustained and kept this valuable resource open for our community's children.

Like many other non-profits, Working Wonders Children's Museum is facing new challenges tied to today's economic conditions. They are currently seeking committed exhibit sponsors and financial donors to help provide the continued hands-on fun of Working Wonders. Any level of support will go toward the continuation of valuable programming and community partnerships.

Already, many community members and businesses have stepped forward to support the museum, boosting confidence about the future. Individual sponsorships and participation in fundraising events, scheduled programming (like Parents Night Out) and other activities are also important.

If you have specific questions, contact DeeDee Erhard, Executive Director, at 389-4500 ext. 12. To donate online, visit the Web site at www.workingwonders.org.

CHC named one of top 50 hospital systems nationwide for quality and efficiency

In a recent study conducted by Thomson Reuters, a leading source of health research and information, Cascade Healthcare Community was named one of the top 50 health systems in the nation for quality and efficiency.

"Providing the safest care for our patients with the best possible outcomes is something we strive for every day at Cascade Healthcare Community," said James A. Diegel, president and CEO of CHC. "To be recognized alongside 49 other top-performing health systems in the nation, including the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic, by a respected research organization is a true achievement."

According to Thomson Reuters, the study evaluated all U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals. Researchers looked at five metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency including mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay and adherence to clinical standards of care.

New Health Curriculum encourages kids to take charge of health

Getting kids to step away from their computers and cell phones and be enthusiastic about their own health issues can be difficult. Thanks to generous support from the MetLife Foundation, Camp Fire USA, a national youth development organization has created the Hold On to Health curriculum. A key component of this new program is that it not only encourages kids to have healthier lifestyles but also shows them how to have fun while doing it - at little to no cost.

The Hold On to Health curriculum employs goal setting and decision-making exercises to teach youth and their families about the importance of eating healthy, being physically active, and making healthy choices. It is age-appropriate, with specific activities designed for youth at each level, from kindergarten through ninth grade.

The Hold On to Health curriculum also has an extensive family component for parents and guardians. Youth who participate in the sessions will be encouraged to take home information and materials to share with their families, so that everyone can be involved.

To find out more about Hold On to Health in Central Oregon contact Camp Fire USA Central Oregon Council at 541-382-4682 or e-mail campfire@bendcable.com.
