     If you’re a parent in Bend, Redmond, La Pine, Sisters or Prineville, you probably have seen or heard about The Central Oregon Family News. It’s that paper you see everywhere you go when you’re waiting for your kids like at the Dr./Dentist office, the pool, or even when you’re passing through their school’s lobby. But did you know that for the past 13 years, The Central Oregon Family News has been a constant support of hundreds of non-profit organizations by publishing their information that benefits thousands of families throughout Central Oregon? Information that teaches parents that they exist and how to best utilize each of their services? Did you know that The Central Oregon Family News has the support of local experts that donate their time and expertise by writing articles to help educate parents how to raise healthier and happier families? Did you know their staff consists of mothers working from home gathering valuable information on local events and activities? So now that you know that much, here’s some more information to learn about The Central Oregon Family News.
     The Central Oregon Family News’ mission is to help strengthen Central Oregon families by encouraging active parental involvement and good decision making, thus building stronger communities in which to raise our children. They accomplish this by keeping parents informed of recreation, education and family-oriented events and activities in the community. They recognize  parenting is a difficult and challenging job, and parents need the right information to make good decisions for their families.
     The Central Oregon Family News remains a constant in our growing community bringing forth valuable and accurate information to our families through a fun-to-read, colorful and exciting publication.

 

  What's New

Free Seminars on May 16 at Neil Kelly

     Area homeowners can see the latest in bath design, learn about new countertop and floor covering products, and get “hands on” with new “green” closet and storage systems Saturday, May 16 at Neil Kelly Design/Build Remodeling’s free Saturday seminars.
     At 9:30 a.m., designer-consultant Michael Mahoney will present a seminar on “Bath Design and Remodeling,” covering initial planning, design and completion of a new bath.
     At 10:45 a.m., designer Suzie Farley Clarke will present the latest in “Countertops and Floor Coverings,” reviewing a wide range of contemporary products.
     At 12:00 p.m., sales consultant Bob Coltrane will present the latest in efficient “Closet Design,” including closet and storage systems for both new and existing homes, with information on a new “healthy” closet system by Neil Kelly Cabinets.

Local Doctor receives 2008 Patient’s Choice Award

     Dr. Patricia Buehler of InFocus Eye Care recently received the 2008 Patient's Choice Award from the American Registry. More than 400,000 patient reviews and ratings were gathered, and this top rating has only been awarded a select few of the nation's most beloved doctors.
     Dr. Buehler was complimented on areas like beside manner, amount of time spent with patients, courtesy of staff, and follow-up.

Steele Associates Architects Advances Building Code Knowledge

     Steele Associates Architects staff Dave Ritcey, Steve Hockman, Steve Olson, Emily Struck, Aaron Rogers, Brennan Steele, Misti Cardin, Jeff Wellman, Seth Anderson, Kimberly Stroup, Rachel Stemach, Mindy Lyman, and Summer Oman recently attended a workshop on the 2007 Oregon Structural Specialty Code. The workshop studies included fire and life safety, exiting, construction types, occupancy groups, and accessibility. Steele Associates Architects is dedicated to furthering their code and technical expertise in order to better serve their clients and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the community.
 

Education Foundation For Bend-La Pine Schools Receives Support From Bank of the Cascades

     At a recent board meeting of the Education Foundation for Bend-La Pine Schools, Bank of the Cascades presented a $13,000 contribution to benefit the Foundation’s Activity Fee Scholarship and the Classroom Impact Grant programs. These funds are the final installment in a three-year commitment to support these programs that serve Summit High School, Mountain View High School and Bend Senior High School.
     “We’re committed to investing in education, and supporting academic and athletic opportunities for all students,” said Julie Miller, EVP, Central Oregon regional manager, Bank of the Cascades. “One of the singular benefits of community banks is that we are able to keep local deposits local — which allows us reinvest in the local community through our corporate philanthropy program.”
 

Insurance Basics – Life, Disability, and Long-term Care

     Northwest Quadrant Wealth Management (formerly Bill Moore and Associates), offering securities through KMS Financial Services, Inc., will present a free workshop on “Insurance Basics – Life, Disability, and Long-term care.”
     It is hard to consider buying insurance that you may never need, but what if you do? We will discuss what these cover, how they work, and when you should consider having these coverages.

High Desert Museum: The Family Ranch: Nurturing Children, the Land and Tradition in the American West

     There is a new exhibit at the High Desert Museum. The Family Ranch: Nurturing Children, the Land and Tradition in the American West, featuring photographs by Madeleine Graham Blake, and the writing of award-winning author Linda Hussa, offers an engaging and moving portrayal of ranch families at work and at play.
     Hussa offers visitors a personal, inside look at how these families are a stabilizing force in the West: raising food, protecting the environment, managing resources and preserving Western heritage they while holding the West open for the rest of us. She also examines the critical issues facing family ranchers.
     The exhibit also looks at how the family ranch lifestyle carries history and tradition forward, continuing this quintessentially American culture. The exhibit is at the Museum through July 26.
 

Working Wonders Children’s Museum Director Attends Association of Children’s Museum Conference in Philadelphia

     DeeDee Erhard, Executive Director for Working Wonders, attended the Association of Children’s Museum conference on April 28-30th in Philadelphia to gain knowledge and training in support of the programming and exhibits of Working Wonders. Children's museums are one of the fastest growing cultural institutions in the United States. Today, there are more than 300 and there is a combined total of nearly $1 billion in capital campaigns underway.
     Why? Children's museums uniquely provide something that has otherwise been missing from communities: a safe, enriching environment that nurtures creativity, play and lifelong learning. Children’s Museums are making the case for the importance of play in the learning lives of infants through adults. Horses for Heroes

     Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center is partnering with the Portland Veterans Administration in a unique event called “Horses for Heroes.” This special interactive workshop, which takes place May 18, 19 and 20 at the Healing Reins barn in southeast Bend, is geared toward veterans of the wars, most of who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury.
     Aside from the event being the first of its kind, the veterans who are part of Horses for Heroes are all female. Armed with the mission to ‘…heal with horses', Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center is offering this unique, three-day workshop to honor our country’s veterans.

PacificSource Health Plans to Offer Coverage to Preferred Health Plan’s Membership

     PacificSource Health Plans announced recently that it has agreed to offer coverage to the membership of Preferred Health Plan, a health insurer in Klamath Falls, Oregon that is leaving the insurance market due to financial problems.
     Effective June 1, 2009, all of PHP’s members will have the opportunity to continue their insurance coverage through PacificSource Health Plans. The Eugene-based insurer is taking steps to ensure that none of PHP’s members lose their health insurance coverage as a result of PHP’s exit from the business.
     “We’re committed to doing everything we can to help PHP’s members retain their coverage,” said Ken Provencher, president and chief executive officer of PacificSource Health Plans. “It’s our hope that nobody will become uninsured as a result of this situation.”
 

May Offers Family Fun at the High Desert Museum

     May is packed with enriching family fun and new art and cultural exhibitions at the Museum.
     May 16 & 17/May 23-25 - 1910 Lazinka Sawmill in Action! – The whistle blows and the huge antique blade whirs. The sawdust flies and pine scent infuses the air as you learn how logs were worked by hand. And, try your hand at some century-old tools. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
     May 22 – New Exhibit Opening – Masters of the Night: The True Story of Bats – Special effects, multi-sensory interactive displays, a Gothic castle and lifelike caves and rain forests help dispel misconceptions about bats, describe their ecological importance and depict the true wonders of the bat world. The exhibit will be open through September 13.
    The Natural History of Hells Canyon Country: A High Desert Museum Excursion in Northeast Oregon
     Join the High Desert Museum and Wallowa Mountain Institute on an adventure in one of North America’s most breathtaking settings! Explore the deepest river-cut gorge in North America, the Wallowa Mountains of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and other spectacular vistas as bighorn sheep and cougar look on.
     Activities and guest speakers offer a unique perspective, letting you feel the landscape come to life through the stories of those who live, work, and play here: the Nez Perce Indians, longtime ranchers, and the scientists and researchers who strive to steward this land.

First Annual Oregon CrossFit Championships

     The Oregon CrossFit Championships will be held on Saturday, May 30, in Bend from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participating athletes will test all ten elements of fitness performing bodyweight, weightlifting and endurance movements at stations along a course in the Old Mill District on the Deschutes River Centennial Loop and in Farewell Bend Park.
     This event is open to ALL levels with Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Elite Classes for both men and women. The event is limited to the first 200 athletes. Registration fee is $20, which includes an official event t-shirt. The deadline is May 25 at 6 p.m. To register online go to www.oregoncrossfit.com or register by phone at 541-923-3433. A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to benefit Saving Grace (formally COBRA).

Hungry All Year Long Food Drive

     In 2009, the face of hunger is changing. Neighbor Impact is seeing an average of an additional 1,300 individuals a month seeking emergency food assistance.
     The Hungry All Year Long Food Drive will take place in June and there are several ways you can be a part of this event:
     1. Donation Spots: We are seeking donations spots in all Central Oregon cities. These spots will be provided with a donation box in their business throughout the month of June. Employees and clients are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items.
     2. Event Sponsorship: By dedicating an event to the drive. Participants are encouraged to bring donations to a one time event. For example, the Young Professionals Network meeting in June 2007 raised over 300 pounds of food in one night.
     3. Volunteer: Volunteers assist the team leaders in the coordination of delivery of donation boxes into the businesses. Volunteers may also be called upon to assist with various tasks as they are needed.

The Center Foundation Announces 2009 Scholarship Winners

     The Center Foundation is pleased to announce its scholarship winners for 2009. Each year the foundation in cooperation with the community presents $1,500 scholarships to outstanding high school juniors. Additionally, the prestigious $5,000 William K. Worrell Scholarship, gifted by Connie Druliner and Express Employment Professionals, is awarded to an outstanding high school senior.
     This year’s William K. Worrell Scholarship winner is Sklyer Nelson from Bend High School. The $1,500 Junior Scholarship winners are Shane Whitney and Ian Smith from LaPine High School; Katelyn Dobbs of Redmond High School; Trede Bailey of Bend High School; Jaime Faulkner of Mt. View High School; Shannon Ferry from Redmond High School; Naomi Wright from Summit High School; Claire Kanzig from Sisters High School; and Emily Rickards from Sisters High School.
     The scholarship winners and their parents will be hosted on May 6 at the Salute to Heroes Scholarship Awards Dinner at St. Charles Conference Center. The public is invited to purchase tickets and join in celebrating these outstanding young people. Talk of the Town: "Crisis in the Classroom” - Budget Cuts on Education

     Elimination of teachers, days in class, programs, and quite possibly even entire schools is just the beginning of historical budget cuts facing the Central Oregon education system. Who will this impact and how?

     City of Bend Fire & Rescue and Grant Writing USA will present a two-day grant writing workshop in Bend, May 28-29, 2009. Beginning and experienced grant writers from city, county and state agencies as well as nonprofits, K-12, colleges and universities are encouraged to attend.

Bank of the Cascades Sponsors Non-Profit Workshop with TACS/NNCO

     Technical Assistance for Community Services (TACS), Nonprofit Network of Central Oregon (NNCO) and Bank of the Cascades have joined forces to provide a comprehensive training series designed to provide valuable tools and resources on nonprofit management and development issues. Anyone who works at, is on the board of or raises money for a non-profit is invited to attend.

Sunriver Sunfest Wine Festival

     Sunriver Sunfest, Central Oregon’s most prestigious wine festival, will be held this year on July 24-26, 2009 in the Village at Sunriver. The festival will kick off Friday night with a wine pairing dinner at Marcellos. Saturday, the festival is open from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. and will resume again on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over 30 wineries will attend from throughout the West.
     Admittance into the festival is free and wines will be sold by the taste, glass, bottle and case. And of course, Sunfest enjoys the fact that it is a family-friendly festival. Kids of all ages can enjoy the mini golf, bumper cars, facepainting, and inflatable slide that will be set up for the weekend.
