"Adopt a Brick" today to support the 2009 Ronald McDonald House Backyard Renovation Project
The idea for an updated backyard was born during the Bend Ronald McDonald House's 10th anniversary celebration in 2007. The current backyard was not as user-friendly as it could be to support the diversity of families housed there during a time of pediatric medical crisis.
The renovation of the Ronald McDonald House backyard is slated to begin later this summer and completed in the fall. The plan includes an outdoor kitchen and covered patio, a basketball half-court, a tricycle path, meditation garden, a brand new play structure and expanded grass and play areas. The expansive patio design will include an "Adopt a Brick” component. An engraved 4x8 brick is $99 and an 8x8 brick is $149. Sponsorships are also available for garden planting areas, memorial benches, the basketball half-court, etc.
For more information about volunteering, fundraising events, or contributing to the ongoing needs of Bend's Ronald McDonald House, please call (541) 318-4950, or visit www.rmhcofcentraloregon.org.

Talk of the Town: Confronting Child Sexual Abuse: A Local Perspective
By the time they are 18, one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused. Over 90 percent of sexual offenders are someone the child already knows. More than 80 percent of incarcerated females were sexually abused. Child sexual abuse impacts all levels of society. Would you recognize the signs or know what to do?
Prevention, protection and healing are possible. From curriculum, trainings, and even anatomically correct dolls, local awareness is possible. More than 3,600 adults in Central Oregon have been trained to better protect our community's children from sexual abuse. In fact, for every trained adult it is estimated ten children are protected.
Talk of the Town will take place on Wednesday, July 29 at the East Bend Campus-Deschutes Children's Foundation located at 2125 NE Dagget Lane. Taping begins at 7:00 p.m. Please R.S.V.P. to Jamie Christman at talk@bendbroadband.com, or call 388-5814. For more information go to www.talkofthetownco.com

The Environmental Center Announces New Mission and Programs to Create a Sustainable Central Oregon
Almost one year ago, the Environmental Center and reSource merged together as one organization in order to more effectively and efficiently serve their shared purpose: to ensure a healthy environment in Central Oregon and beyond, today and for future generations.
The Environmental Center's new mission is embedding sustainability into daily life in Central Oregon.
"We believe that ensuring a healthy future for people and the planet hinges on how we live our daily lives," said Executive Director Mike Riley. "And that means taking a second look at how we get around town, how we generate and dispose of waste, what we eat, how we consume and how we teach our children about creating a sustainable future."
In addition to a new mission, is a focused effort to advance a regional transit system and youth education. Riley announced a new focus on teaching youth about nutrition and sustainable urban gardening. The City of Bend has agreed to lease the lot adjacent to The Environmental Center for use as its first pilot garden site. The Kansas Avenue Learning Garden is a pilot project that The Environmental Center hopes to replicate within walking distance from several elementary schools over the next few years.

The Every Kid Fund receives $4,000 from the 25th Annual Riverhouse Invitational Golf Tournament
The Riverhouse presented $4,000 to The Every Kid Fund in June raised from the 25th Annual Riverhouse Invitational golf tournament held at the end of May at River's Edge golf course. Combined Communications partnered with The Riverhouse for this year's tournament along with other corporate sponsors. Over thirty other businesses made contributions in the form of tee sponsorships and prizes.
Wayne Purcell, Owner and Operations Manager of The Riverhouse, said, "During these unprecedented and difficult economic times, we need to help our local charities as much as possible. With school budgets as tight as they are and program costs constantly on the rise, not all kids can afford to participate in the extra-curricular activities they enjoy. We feel it's essential that children have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial situation."
The Every Kid Fund is an endowment that provides scholarship money to needy kids, high school age and younger, so they can participate in after school activities such as sports, drama, speech, music and other opportunities. Efforts such as the Riverhouse golf tournament have contributed $162,700 to more than 1,700 scholarships.

Airgas Continues Operation Homefront Support with Second $100,000 Donation
Airgas, Inc., the largest U.S. distributor of industrial, medical, and specialty gases, and welding, safety, and related products, marked the Independence Day holiday by reaffirming its commitment to Operation Homefront. Operation Homefront is a charity that supports America's troops by providing emergency assistance and moral support to the families our troops leave behind when they are deployed and to wounded service members when they return home.
A donation of $100,000 was presented to Operation Homefront at the Airgas Southwest store on W.W. White Road in San Antonio, Texas, the city where Operation Homefront is headquartered. Airgas announced last year a $300,000 pledge to be paid in increments of $100,000 per year over three years, with 70 percent going toward Operation Homefront's projects to assist wounded soldiers.
At that time, Airgas also set a goal to hire 100 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan service in the following 12 months, and began offering the Airgas "Welding 101" course to any veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan service who is interested in exploring a career in welding. In light of challenging economic conditions, Airgas is extending the duration of its goal in hiring veterans to span the three-year commitment that it has to Operation Homefront, as well as its offer of Welding 101 training.
