Loose Skin After Weight Loss
The skin, otherwise known as the integumentary system, is the largest organ of the body with the responsibility of many important functions such as external protection from disease and injury, regulation of body fluids, absorption of light, gases, toxins and others and the synthesis of melanin, keratin and vitamin D. It is very important to understand that the skin (with the exception of a majority of the outer layer) is a living entity that is constantly dying off and being replaced.
There are three basic layers to the skin.
1. Epidermis - Composed of squamous epithelium cells of up to five layers. All of these layers of cells, except the deepest, are dead.
2. Dermis - Thicker than the Epidermis, this layer is very alive and contains blood vessels as well as many nerves, glands and hair follicles. This layer contains many elastic/collagenous fibers to support and give tension to the skin.
3. Hypodermis - Deeper than the Dermis, this layer is composed primarily of loose fibrous connective tissue, adipose cells (fat) and blood vessels.
The health/elasticity of these three layers will greatly depend on a number of factors such as age, health and overall vitality or lack thereof of someone in conjunction with the original size of the person and how quickly/slowly the weight was lost. Keep in mind that one's health on the inside will be directly reflected by the health shown on the outside. How can the body manufacture/regenerate high quality skin cells on a diet of coffee, McDonald's and pop tarts?
The following specific factors need to be considered:
* Consuming high quality fatty acids from essential/non-saturated sources (Omega 3s, DHA/EPA from fish oils) and saturated (organic/free range animal fats) sources for optimal cell membrane integrity as well as countless other benefits.
* Drinking 1/2 bodyweight in ounces of clean chlorine/fluoride free water daily.
* Getting 6-8 hours of sleep each night.
The factors above will play a great role in determining a person's digestive health. A lifetime of stress, dehydration (by way of coffee, soda, Gatorade, processed milk, etc.), malnourishment, inadequate sleep and toxicity (pollution, conventionally farmed/raised foods, plastics, etc.) can result in what's known as "leaky gut" syndrome.
This is where lining of the intestine becomes inflamed (due the stressors just mentioned), causing many digestive problems. Because we truly "are what we eat," this ultimately results in any number of health issues including weight gain, fat retention and, of course, unhealthy skin.
So, will your skin go completely back to normal? It is quite possible with time, though not a guarantee. Ultimately, it is up to each individual and how much of a priority they make this endeavor.

Go Green When Shipping Holiday Gifts
Between wrapping paper, packaging peanuts, cardboard boxes and the fuel needed to move gifts around, holiday shipping may seem a bit environmentally unfriendly. The folks at PostNet can help you stay green while still making sure your gifts arrive on time and in one piece this holiday season.
"We always want to make sure we're doing our part to be just a little more environmentally friendly at PostNet," said Jim Kane, Bend PostNet owner. "For instance, our customers love that they can bring in used packaging peanuts, and we'll reuse them when packaging shipments."
Additional ways customers can stay green while shipping from PostNet this holiday season include:
Send Gifts Early: Planning ahead will assure your gifts can be shipped ground, which is more fuel-efficient than air. Plus, shipping ground will save you money. To ensure ground delivery by Christmas, make sure you ship before Dec. 15, 2009.
Pack Efficiently: Smaller boxes require less packaging materials and use fewer resources. The packaging experts at PostNet can help you measure, pack and secure your items in a custom box that is just the right size.
Use Recycled Packaging Peanuts: Bend PostNet accepts used packaging peanuts, which means less waste and a more sensitive environmental footprint.
"We want to make sure we do the little things that can make a real difference in our environment and in our customer's lives," said Kane.
In fact, Bend PostNet is constantly striving to reduce the impact of its business on the environment. Through its affiliation with the Plastic Loose Fill Council, Bend PostNet is a registered recycling center for the approximately 45 million pounds of packaging peanuts produced annually.

Tower Theatre Foundation and B.E.A.T. present "A CHRISTMAS CAROL"
This December, a stellar community cast of youth and adults once again brings to life the classic story of redemption and the true holiday spirit. Bend Experimental Art Theatre (B.E.A.T.) and the Tower Theatre Foundation reunite to co-produce an original adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," as Tiny Tim teaches Scrooge the importance of compassion.
This year, the holiday magic continues December 17-22 with two daytime performances for school children, a half-priced matinee, and five evening shows.
The play, adapted by Howard Schor and directed by Mary Kilpatrick, features Rick Jenkins as "Scrooge" leading many of the area's best actors in two casts: a traditional "community cast" of adults and children and—for the school performances and matinee—a "youth cast" of school-aged children portraying many of the "adult" roles.
Program information, group discounts and individual tickets to this holiday gift for children and families of Central Oregon are available at the Tower Theatre box office, or at www.towertheatre.org.
