Better Cell Phone Reception

If you find you get no bars and too many dropped calls on your cell phone, you can blame it on the local antenna phobia. Since Aubrey Butte is our only cell antenna site, anyone behind a hill or in a forest can experience poor service and times of no service. A second or third cell tower site would give Bend the same quality cell phone service found in big cities, and would make our phones work better out in the boonies where we may need to make emergency calls.
There are some places in your home with better reception than others. Carry your phone around your home watching the “bars”. Determine which rooms get a better signal. Call from there and leave your phone in that room on its charger. Turn in a circle while watching the “bars” on your phone and determine which direction your phone points when it gets the most signal.
Moving, as in driving a car or walking, makes the radio in your cell phone have a difficult time locking onto the radio signal. Stand still for best (no clicking) sound.
To get the best cellular reception in a fringe area, go to the room with the best reception, and stand still with the phone pointed in the optimum direction. Or consider installing a cell phone booster in your house.
For help with radio or antenna problems call Jim Shaw at (541) 322-6864, or go to www.jimshawantenna.com.

FREE Feline Vaccine with Spay/Neuter

The Bend Spay and Neuter Project is a nonprofit, low-cost spay and neuter clinic. Our mission is to end pet and stray animal homelessness and reduce euthanasia’s in our shelters by offering the public low cost spays and neuters. No income proof is required, we believe the only way to put a stop to unnecessary death and disease is to get to the root of the problem and target overpopulation. Our clinic opened in October of 2005 and in those 3 years, we have spayed and neutered 14,000 cats and dogs. We want to encourage the community to help us put an end to this tragic problem and have their animals altered. In celebration of our anniversary we are offering a FREE feline vaccine for all spay/neuter appointments in the month of October (mention this ad). We also offer assistance with trapping and altering feral cats and strays, all done on a donation basis. Call 617-1010 or e-mail info@bendsnip.org for more information. Visit our Web site www.bendsnip.org.

Chase Manhattan Mortgage’s Bend office offers helpful advice for local home buyers

In an effort to help local home buyers make the best choice when deciding on a mortgage, Chase's Bend mortgage office is offering tips that will help them with the process.
"It is very important that home buyers choose a mortgage that best fits their needs," said Gary Duffy, Bend mortgage office manager. "As one of the nation's leading residential housing lenders, we work to keep homeowners in their homes, and that starts with making loans that people can afford for the long term."
Duffy suggests the following tips when selecting a mortgage:
     * First, you should determine how much you can afford to spend. Your monthly house payment including principal interest and escrow for taxes generally should be no more than 28-36 percent of your gross monthly pay.
     * Make sure you understand the mortgage process and all of its terms. For example, be familiar with the differences between a fixed rate versus an adjustable rate mortgage. Understand what points are and how they can affect your interest rate and closing costs. For basic information on these and other topics, check out www.chase.com/mortgage.
     * Make sure you are working with a Realtor who understands your specific needs and the local housing market.
     * Gather income and asset information so you have it handy once you are ready to buy. This information is needed to process your loan in a timely manner.
For information about Chase's Bend mortgage office, contact Gary Duffy at 541-388-8709.

Events at the Tower Theater

On September 28, Tower Theatre goers will enjoy an evening of the blues with Taj Mahal. A fine guitarist, musician and songwriter, Mahal is best known for his love of the blues. In 1997 and again in 2000 he won two Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2006 he appeared as a guest musician on the Ladysmith Black Mambazo album, Long Walk to Freedom. (Ladysmith sold out the Tower Theatre in April this year). He has also recorded numerous pieces of music for several movie soundtracks, including Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and The Blues Brothers 2000.
On October 26, premier Native American flautist, R. Carlos Nakai comes to the Tower Theatre. Originally trained in classical trumpet and music theory, Nakai was given a traditional cedar wood flute as a gift and challenged to see what he could do with it. He has since been nominated for four Grammy Awards, and two of his records, Canyon Trilogy and Earth Spirit have been RIAA certified Gold. These are the first two Native American flute albums to go gold. R. Carlos Nakai melds the haunting sounds of the Native American flute with the soulful expressiveness of the cello of Israeli-born Udi Bar-David, who will join him on stage. Native American, Jewish, Arabic, and Turkish melodies are presented in diverse arrangements and unified by two eclectic and iconoclastic artists who personify their respective peoples.
