Credit Union Federal Insurance Coverage Raises to $250,000 Under New Financial Rescue Legislation
Submitted by Mid Oregon Credit Union

New legislation was recently signed in Washington by the U.S. Senate and the House that will increase the level of federal insurance for credit union savings to $250,000.
“News stories about the increase in federal insurance need to reflect the fact that credit unions are included in the legislation – 90 million credit union members across the nation need to know about this development,” said Daniel A. Mica, president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association, the trade association for credit unions.
The legislation (the “Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008”) would increase federal savings insurance coverage from $100,000 to $250,000.
Savings in every federally insured credit union are backed by the National Credit Union Share Insurance fund (NCUSIF), a fund maintained by the U.S. Treasury. The NCUSIF is administered by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the federal government, which now insures credit union member savings up to at least $250,000. Federal insurance protects credit union members’ money in share savings, share draft/checking, money market, share certificate, trust fund, and retirement accounts.
Funds in a federally insured credit union can be insured to a level much higher than $250,000, depending on how the accounts are established. In Oregon, every credit union is federally insured by NCUSIF.
NCUSIF coverage is to credit unions as the FDIC coverage is to banks. The “full faith and credit” of the U.S. Treasury backs both funds.
For more information, see www.cuna.org. For more information about credit union federal insurance coverage, see www.ncua.gov or www.creditunion.coop.

Strong Medicine

Disease. Warfare. Stagecoach accidents. Life was perilous on the High Desert frontier. Strong Medicine, an exhibit opened on October 10 at the High Desert Museum, immerses visitors in the 19th-century, as the area’s native peoples, explorers, workers, soldiers and settlers coped with injury and sickness.
From live “medical” leeches, amputation saws, and bullet extractors, to early hypodermic needles and primitive medicines, rare artifacts accompanied by real stories from the frontier and living history performers allow visitors to discover how High Desert pioneers dealt with disease and injury in vast expanses of treacherous terrain.
Children can explore a re-created 1880s doctor’s office – scaled down to a child’s size – and play frontier-style “Operation” with “Mortimer,” the dummy patient.
“Together, Indian healers and ill-trained frontier doctors, nurses, midwives and army surgeons advanced medicine in the High Desert,” said Bob Boyd, curator of Western History. “As these people grew to know the environment, its resources and each other, medicinal treatment on the frontier grew from primitive beginnings to the profession we know today.”

What's Happening at the Tower Theatre

On October 26, premier Native American flautist, R. Carlos Nakai comes to the Tower Theatre. Originally trained in classical trumpet and music theory, Nakai was given a traditional cedar wood flute as a gift and challenged to see what he could do with it. He has since been nominated for four Grammy Awards, and two of his records, Canyon Trilogy and Earth Spirit have been RIAA certified Gold. These are the first two Native American flute albums to go gold. R. Carlos Nakai melds the haunting sounds of the Native American flute with the soulful expressiveness of the cello of Israeli-born Udi Bar-David, who will join him on stage. Native American, Jewish, Arabic, and Turkish melodies are presented in diverse arrangements and unified by two eclectic and iconoclastic artists who personify their respective peoples.
On November 16, the Tower Theatre audience will experience blu-pop with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. This multi-Grammy winning, primarily instrumental group from the USA, draws equally on bluegrass, fusion and jazz, sometimes dubbed “blu-pop.” The band formed in 1988, initially to perform once on the PBS series Lonesome Pine Specials. The Flecktones have toured extensively since then, often playing over 200 concerts per year. Front man Béla Fleck plays acoustic and electric banjos, mixing a bluegrass and folk sound into a modern improvisational style. Fleck has received Grammy nominations for performances in the jazz, bluegrass, pop, spoken word, contemporary Christian, gospel, classical and country categories. To date, he is the only artist to receive nominations in as many diverse categories.
