Five Strategies for
Working Less and Accomplishing More
By Tracy Campbell, Design Solutions, LLC
If you long to leave work at a reasonable hour knowing
you had a productive day, consider these simple (not
necessarily easy) steps
to help you significantly increase your productivity and
decrease your stress:
Identify what really matters to you in life. As
the old saying goes, “If you keep doing what you’re
doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.” Many of
us are like ducks swimming across the water – we look
calm, but underneath we’re paddling like crazy – and
going in circles! It takes real courage to stop long
enough to assess your current situation. As we grow
older, our priorities change, and it’s important to
build your life around your priorities.
Figure out what it is you do best and spend the majority
of your time doing it. Take
advantage of
companies, coaches and books which offer services to
help you identify your strengths. Now Discover
Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham is a great
place to start or investigate assessment tools at sites
such as
www.kolbe.com.
Make your office a place where you can accomplish your
work and enjoy your day.
Don’t underestimate the
power of a “productive environment” where you can
effectively and efficiently manage your time, space and
information. Again, books as well as coaching and
consulting professionals are available to impart
knowledge, insight and practical tools for information
management. For more information, contact the Oregon Chapter
of Professional Organizers at
www.oregonnapo.com.
Use technology tools to streamline your business. Most
everything an entrepreneur has to do today can be
improved with technology; communication, marketing,
administration, customer service – you name it! Small
businesses might consider adding an additional level of
customer service via the use of a virtual receptionist
www.virtualreceptionists.biz. Overwhelmed with
voicemail? Consider a unified messaging system and if email
overload is an issue talk with the email training
experts at
www.cohesiveknowledgesolutions.com.
Continually ask yourself, “Is this the best use of my
time right now?” and encourage everyone around you to do
the same.
Include someone in your life who will hold you
accountable; that’s what the coaching industry is all
about. Explore working with a certified Coaching
Professional at
www.certifiedcoach.org.

Step Up to the Blue Sky
Challenge
Working together, we can make a difference with
climate change. By choosing the Blue Sky program
from Pacific Power you can support the
development of new renewable energy, avoid
putting thousands of tons of carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere and make the Bend business
community one of the nation’s leaders in
sustainability. The city of Bend already
purchases 10 percent of its energy from
renewable sources through Blue Sky. The
challenge, issued Oct. 2, is to have 10 percent
of the community buying renewable power by Earth
Day, April 22, 2008. For every percentage point
above 10 percent, the city of Bend promises to
increase its participation, vowing to purchase
up to 15 percent of its power from renewable
resources as well. Let’s push the city to 15
percent. Pacific Power’s Blue Sky energy comes
from wind, solar and biomass facilities. When a
customer enrolls, Blue Sky dollars go directly
to buy renewable energy and to cover the cost of
the program. Customers who want to sign up for a
renewable energy option can call Pacific Power
at 800-769-3717, or visit
www.pacificpower.net/bluesky.
