Practice Effective Time Management
By Monica Wheeler
Abundant Life Coaching

Time is one of the world’s most precious commodities.  We are always researching ways to create more of it, to manage it wisely and to not waste a single second.  I am no expert on managing time wisely, but I was once the authority on how to best waste it.
When my daughter was in preschool, I had a lot of time on my hands.  There were only so many walks I could take her on or hours at the playground and preschool was only a few days per week.  I was stuck at home with a four-year-old and a house to take care of, so I became entrenched in the great American time waster—soap operas.
I would also fold clothes and cook while doing this, but really, what a complete waste of time.  I could have written another book in those hours that I wasted away watching the pathetic and superficial lives of fictional characters.
I am much better now and get a lot done on a daily basis, but I don’t spend much time watching “bad” television.  If I do watch television, I tend to choose something educational.  If you ever start complaining about not having enough hours in the day, take an inventory on just how many hours you spend watching meaningless sitcoms or the depressing news, playing mindless video games, or surfing the net.  It may be more than you think.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe has a perfect quote, “We always have enough time, if we but use it all right.”  I believe this is true.  We have enough time to accomplish whatever is necessary in this world, but that may mean getting up a little earlier, going to bed a little later, or skipping that Seinfeld rerun or hours at the local neighborhood bar and grill.
With that being said, it is equally important to take time to just “be”.  Not every hour needs to be productive.  I get a lot of recharging done on my daily walks or soaking in the tub.  I do my best thinking at these times.  As the world gets faster and faster, you need to pace yourself and slow down.  Take yourself out of the “rat race” once in awhile for self reflection and peace of mind.
Praise shouldn’t always be given to those who get the most done in an hour, but to those who become the most in an hour.  And that is the most productive use of time management there is.
If you want more individualized coaching I can be reached at 541-383-2464 or by emailing  coachmonica@hotmail.com.
