Distinguish Yourself by Going
That Extra Mile
By Monica Wheeler
Abundant Life Coaching
Many clients come to me
asking for help on how to grow their businesses. “How
can I set myself apart from the competition?” they ask.
The first thing I look at is what are they giving that
is of value to their customers. Are they going that
extra mile? Are they giving more of themselves than
their competition? These are tough questions to be
asking.
How do you go that extra mile? Let’s say for example
that someone orders 10 apples. To go that extra mile is
more than just throwing an 11th apple on top
of the bag free of charge. Going that extra mile means
adding something of value that is unique and unexpected,
such as adding a nice juicy nectarine on top of the bag
of apples.
How do you do this in real life? Let’s take real
estate for example … It is great to sell a family a new
home and even better to give them a house warming gift,
but even better yet is to throw them a housewarming
party. That is going the extra mile at its finest! It
can be rather simple, as well. You don’t have to spend
a lot of extra money to go that extra mile. You do,
however, have to be creative.
I do the same with coaching. I routinely go over my
allocated coaching time and give people a great value
and a great service. But what is even better is to send
them home with a helpful book or sign them up for one of
my seminars for free. That is the juicy nectarine -
something unique and unexpected that gives the customer
instant value.
To set yourself apart from the competition, think of
ways to go that extra mile and add something of value to
your customers. What can you do that is unique and
unexpected? Can you send your customers to a seminar?
Can you send them an unexpected extra benefit? Use your
creativity and start today going that extra mile - that
little extra uniqueness that puts you in a class by
yourself.
