We Are All Leaders
By Monica Wheeler, Life Coach
Abundant Life Coaching
We had extensive leadership training while at the Air
Force Academy. In fact the entire focus of the Academy
was training us to be officers and leaders.
But that first year we learned to be good followers.
You cannot be a good leader without first being a good
follower. To be a good follower, you need
discipline—which I wrote about last month. You also
need to be able to take orders before you are put in a
position to give orders.
As a leader we learned the importance of taking
responsibility for our decisions, and learning how to
make the right ones. We learned about listening to our
subordinates and being aware of their concerns and how
to give proper feedback and reprimands. We learned
about the importance of respecting those beneath you
even as you are sometimes forced to make tough
decisions. But most importantly we learned that the
best leaders lead by example.
Leadership patterns can be patterned after wolves. The
leader of a wolf pack usually runs in the middle of the
pack—faster runners ahead and slower runners behind.
This way he can push those in front to go in a certain
direction and to move at a certain pace while pulling
those in the rear to keep the pace and follow.
We are all leaders. We are leaders to our children.
Leaders in our PTO meetings and leaders in the
community. We are leaders at our jobs, leaders amongst
our peers and leaders when managing our finances. We
all take leadership roles every day so it is imperative
to foster great leadership skills. If you want more one
on one coaching on leadership or any other area of
concern I can be reached at 383-2464 or by emailing
coachmonica@hotmail.com.

LibertyBank Offers Tips for Identity Theft Prevention
During Busy Holiday Shopping Season
As the holiday season continues, so does an increase in
the incidence of identity theft. For reasons ranging
from increased transactions to an increase in new credit
cards, identity thieves use the holiday shopping season
to maneuver some of their biggest scams. The Federal
Trade Commission reports that one in 10 consumers will
experience identity theft during this holiday shopping
season.
“Identity theft is very prevalent in Oregon,” says
Steve Hurst, senior vice president of operations,
systems and risk management for LibertyBank. “In fact,
the state of Oregon ranked 13th in the nation on the
FTC’s 2005 list of identity theft victims per 100,000
residents. And although you cannot fully control
whether or not you’re a victim of identity theft, there
are ways you can minimize your risk.”
LibertyBank advises consumers to take the following
steps to prevent identity theft this holiday season:
1. Shred all documents with secure information such as
charge receipts, copies of credit applications,
insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank
statements and expired credit cards.
2. Don’t carry your Social Security card. Leave it in a
safe place. Don’t give your Social Security number
unless it’s absolutely necessary; ask to use other types
of identifiers.
3. Carry only the identification information and credit
cards that you’ll actually need for each shopping trip.
4. Pick up your mail promptly. Use a locking mailbox or
post office box to receive your mail.
5. Outgoing mail should be sent from the post office or
a secure mail drop location rather than in an unsecured
mailbox.
6. Expect your statements and investigate if they do
not arrive on time. Then review your statements as soon
as possible to ensure no unauthorized activity on your
accounts.
7. Be cautious when responding to promotions,
especially when releasing personal information.
8. Keep your purse and wallet in a safe place at work.
9. When ordering new checks, pick them up from the bank
instead of having them mailed to your home mailbox.
10. Place passwords on your credit cards, bank and
phone accounts. Try to avoid using key words such as
your mother’s maiden name, the last four digits of your
Social Security number or your phone number; these are
used too commonly and are easy to guess.
The FTC recommends that you regularly obtain a copy of
your credit report and review it for unauthorized
activity. An amendment to the Federal Fair Credit
Reporting Act requires each of the major nationwide
consumer reporting companies to provide you with a free
copy of your credit report at your request, once every
12 months.
LibertyBank provides financial services to clients
throughout Oregon with 13 offices in Eugene,
Springfield, Bend, Grants Pass, Medford and Portland.
